🎯 Lesson Goal:
Use a/an, the, or no article (∅) correctly to talk about people, places, and things.
1. Warm-Up (3 min)
🗣️ Discuss:
What do you usually have for breakfast?
What’s the most interesting book you’ve read?
Do you live in a house or an apartment?
💬 Sample answers:
I usually have a coffee and a sandwich for breakfast.
I live in an apartment in the city centre.
🎯 Focus: They naturally use a/an for general things and the for specific ones.
2. Presentation (8 min)
A. A / An (Indefinite Article)
Use a/an when talking about something general or mentioned for the first time.
a → before consonant sounds (a dog, a car, a university)
an → before vowel sounds (an apple, an hour, an honest man)
💬 Examples:
I saw a film yesterday.
She’s an engineer.
📘 Note: We don’t know which film or engineer — it’s not specific.
B. The (Definite Article)
Use the when the listener/reader knows exactly what you’re talking about.
💬 Examples:
The film was amazing! (We both know which film.)
Can you pass the salt, please? (There’s only one salt on the table.)
He’s the teacher I told you about.
📘 Also used with:
Superlatives: the best, the most beautiful
Unique things: the sun, the moon, the Internet
Musical instruments: play the piano, the guitar
C. No Article (∅)
No article is used for general ideas, plural nouns, or uncountable nouns when speaking in general.
💬 Examples:
I love music.
Teachers should be respected.
She drinks coffee every morning.
🟢 But:
The music in this café is nice. (specific)
I love the teachers at my school. (specific group)

The → talking about specific group (the people here).

the → specific cat (you both know which one).
The → specific river’s water.
4. Sentence Transformation (5 min)
Rewrite the second sentence using the correct article.
I saw cat. Cat was black.
Do you like coffee? Coffee here is strong.
We stayed in hotel. Hotel was near beach.
