Pronunciation in Action

Goal: Combine consonant accuracy, vowel precision and diphthongs with natural word stress, sentence rhythm and connected speech.

Accent reference: Modern British English.

1. Word Stress

Instructions: Say each word aloud, stressing the syllable in capital letters. Keep the other syllables lighter.

  • comMUnicate

  • proNUNciation

  • deCIsion

  • opportTUnity

Practise these sentences:

  • It's important to communicate clearly.

  • I want to develop my pronunciation.

  • We need to make a reliable decision.

  • This opportunity could improve my professional skills.

  • I'm comfortable speaking English in most situations.

2. Word Stress Changes

Instructions: Notice how stress changes between related words. Practise each pair before reading the sentences.

  • PHOtograph — phoTOGraphy

  • ecoNOMic — ecoNOMical

  • PHOnetics — phoNEtic

  • DEVelop — deVELopment

  • REcord (noun) — reCORD (verb)

  • PREsent (noun) — preSENT (verb)

Practise these sentences:

  • I took a photograph during my holiday.

  • The company plans to develop a new product.

  • They presented the results at the meeting.

  • I need to record a short presentation.

  • The development of these skills takes time.

3. Sentence Stress

Instructions: Stress the important information words. Say grammar words such as a, the, to, and and more lightly.

  • I NEED to FINISH this TODAY.

  • She BOUGHT a NEW COMPUTER.

  • We SHOULD have LEFT EARLIER.

  • I WANT to IMPROVE my ENGLISH.

  • They DIDN'T TELL me about the CHANGE.

Practise these sentences:

  • I thought you were going to call me yesterday.

  • We need to find a better way to manage our time.

  • She didn't realise how important the meeting was.

  • I'd like to improve my confidence when speaking English.

  • They told us the appointment had been moved to Friday.

4. Weak Forms and Natural Speech

Instructions: In natural speech, common words often become shorter. Practise the phrases without giving every word equal emphasis.

  • want to → wanna in informal speech; retain want to in careful speech

  • going to → gonna in informal speech; retain going to in careful speech

  • can → often weak /kən/

  • and → often weak /ən/ or /n/

  • of → often weak /əv/ or /ə/

Practise these sentences naturally:

  • I can help you with that.

  • We need a cup of tea and a little time.

  • I'd like to have a look at the report.

  • She's going to call us after work.

  • I want to learn more about the subject.

  • A lot of people are interested in the idea.

5. Linking Words Together

Instructions: Connect the final consonant of one word to the vowel at the start of the next. Avoid unnecessary pauses.

  • turn it off

  • take it out

  • leave it alone

  • an interesting idea

  • an old friend

  • work on it

  • find out

  • send it over

Practise these sentences:

  • Could you turn it off when you leave?

  • I need to take it out of my bag.

  • We came up with an interesting idea.

  • I spoke to an old friend yesterday.

  • I'll work on it after lunch.

  • Can you send it over when you're ready?

6. Difficult Consonant Clusters

Instructions: Pronounce every consonant without adding extra vowel sounds. Start slowly, then increase your speed while maintaining clarity.

Practise these sentences:

  • The next step is to strengthen our strategy.

  • I asked three students to explain their answers.

  • We discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the project.

  • She wrote several texts before sending the final message.

  • I must finish the scripts before the next meeting.

7. Thought Groups and Pausing

Instructions: Read each sentence in meaningful chunks. Pause briefly at the slash. Avoid pausing after every word.

  • When I finish work / I usually go to the gym.

  • Although I was tired / I decided to keep practising.

  • If you need any help / just let me know.

  • The main problem / is that we don't have enough time.

  • After looking at the options / we made our decision.

Practise these longer sentences:

  • Although the task seemed difficult at first, I gradually became more confident.

  • If we organise our time carefully, we can make progress without feeling overwhelmed.

  • The main reason I practise every day is that I want to communicate more naturally.

  • After discussing the different options, we decided to choose the most practical solution.

8. Mixed Pronunciation Activation

Instructions: Read each sentence three times: slowly, at normal speed, then with natural rhythm and emphasis.

  • I thought the best approach was to practise a little every day.

  • She explained the changes clearly, although some details were difficult to understand.

  • We found a reliable way to organise the project and improve communication.

  • The three students arrived late because they couldn't find the right place.

  • I'd like to develop my confidence before presenting the results.

  • Although the decision was difficult, we eventually found a practical solution.

  • I appreciate the advice, but I need a little more time to think it through.

  • The next step is to identify the problem and explain how we can solve it.

9. Independent Speaking

Instructions:

  • Record yourself speaking for two minutes about a personal or professional goal.

  • Include at least five words with challenging consonants, five words with contrasting vowels and three diphthongs.

  • Listen for unclear sounds, unnatural stress and pauses in the middle of phrases.

  • Choose three problem sentences and repeat each five times.

  • Record yourself again and compare both versions.

10. Final Challenge

Instructions: Read the paragraph aloud twice. Then cover it and summarise it in your own words without preparing a script.

Over the past few months, I've been trying to improve the way I communicate. I've realised that speaking clearly isn't just about pronouncing individual sounds correctly. It's also about stressing the right words, connecting sounds naturally and speaking at a comfortable pace. Although progress takes time, regular practice has helped me become more confident. My next step is to use these skills in everyday conversations, especially when discussing unfamiliar topics or expressing complex ideas.
