GRAMMAR – ZERO CONDITIONAL

We use the zero conditional to talk about:

• Facts
• Scientific truths
• General rules
• Things that are always true

Structure

• If + present simple, present simple

or

• Present simple + if + present simple

Examples

• If it rains, the ground gets wet.
• If people recycle, less waste goes to landfill.
• Animals suffer if they lose their habitat.
• The population grows if birth rates increase.

More Examples

• If people damage the environment, animals lose their homes.
• If hunting is uncontrolled, some species become endangered.
• If forests disappear, the atmosphere changes.
• If it rains a lot, the rainforest grows quickly.
• Plants die if they do not receive water.

Negative Examples

• If people don't protect nature, ecosystems suffer.
• If animals don't find food, they become weak.
• The air doesn't stay clean if pollution increases.

Question Examples

DIALOGUE – PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Anna: What happens if people cut down too many trees?

Mark: If forests disappear, animals lose their homes.

Anna: And what happens if the population continues to grow?

Mark: If more people need land, natural habitats become smaller.

Anna: Does hunting affect wildlife?

Mark: Yes. If hunting is uncontrolled, animal numbers decrease.

Anna: So protecting the environment is important.

Mark: Exactly. If we protect nature, ecosystems stay healthy.

SHORT ARTICLE

The natural world depends on balance. If people protect the environment, plants and animals have a better chance of surviving. In many regions, the population continues to grow, and this creates pressure on natural habitats. If forests are destroyed, many species lose their homes. This is especially true in the rainforest, where thousands of animals and plants depend on the same ecosystem. In some areas, hunting also affects wildlife numbers. If governments create strong environmental laws, endangered species receive better protection. Beautiful natural landscapes attract visitors, but they must be managed carefully. If people respect nature, the Earth's atmosphere and ecosystems remain healthier for future generations.

Read the article twice. Focus on the zero conditional structures.
