WARM UP

Think about animals and nature.

• Which animals hibernate during the winter?
• What helps animals survive in difficult conditions?
• Why is protecting natural habitats important?
• What happens if the soil becomes polluted?
• Should people focus on short-term solutions or long-term solutions for environmental problems? Why?

Answer in full sentences.

VOCABULARY – NATURE & WILDLIFE

survive – sobrevivir
Example: Some animals struggle to survive during harsh winters.

habitat – hábitat
Example: The forest is the natural habitat of many species.

long-term – a largo plazo
Example: Scientists are looking for long-term solutions to environmental problems.

short-term – a corto plazo
Example: The government introduced a short-term plan to reduce pollution.

soil – suelo / tierra
Example: Healthy soil helps plants grow.

breed – reproducirse / criar
Example: Many animals breed during the spring.

hibernate – hibernar
Example: Bears hibernate during the coldest months of the year.

Say each word out loud.
Think about how animals adapt to their environment.

GRAMMAR – FIRST CONDITIONAL

We use the first conditional to talk about:

• Possible future situations
• Real future consequences
• Predictions based on a condition

Structure

• If + present simple, will + base verb

or

• Will + base verb + if + present simple

Examples

• If animals lose their habitat, they will struggle to survive.
• If we protect forests, wildlife will be safer.
• If farmers improve the soil, crops will grow better.
• If temperatures rise, some species will migrate.

More Examples

• If animals have enough food, they will breed successfully.
• If the winter is very cold, some animals will hibernate for longer.
• If governments invest in long-term solutions, the environment will improve.
• If people focus only on short-term results, problems will continue.
• If habitats disappear, many species will not survive.

Negative Examples

• If we don't protect the soil, food production will decrease.
• If people don't respect wildlife, some species will disappear.
• Animals won't breed successfully if their habitats are destroyed.

Question Examples

• What will happen if temperatures continue to rise?
• What will animals do if they lose their habitat?
• Will endangered species survive if conservation projects continue?

DIALOGUE – PROTECTING WILDLIFE

Anna: What will happen if forests continue to disappear?

Mark: Many animals will lose their habitat.

Anna: Will they survive?

Mark: Some will, but others won't.

Anna: What about breeding programmes?

Mark: If conservation groups help animals breed, some populations will recover.

Anna: And what if governments create long-term plans?

Mark: The environment will improve, and more species will survive.

Read again and practise.

SHORT ARTICLE

Many scientists believe that wildlife protection requires both immediate action and long-term planning. If governments protect natural habitats, many species will have a better chance to survive. Healthy soil is also important because plants and crops depend on it. If the soil becomes damaged, entire ecosystems will suffer. Some animals hibernate during winter to save energy, while others migrate to warmer regions. Conservation experts also create programmes to help endangered animals breed successfully. If these efforts continue, animal populations will increase. However, if people focus only on short-term solutions, environmental problems will become more difficult to solve in the future.

Read the article twice. Focus on the first conditional structures.
