GRAMMAR – PRESENT SIMPLE vs PRESENT CONTINUOUS

We use the present simple for routines, facts, and regular actions.

We use the present continuous for actions happening now or temporary situations.

• Present simple → routines / facts
• Present continuous → now / temporary actions

Examples – Present Simple

• He usually wins matches.
• Our team often scores goals.
• They sometimes lose games.
• She always enters competitions.

Examples – Present Continuous

• He is playing in a tournament now.
• Our team is winning the match at the moment.
• She is scoring lots of points today.
• They are beating the other team right now.

Comparison

• We usually win games.
(routine)

• We are winning the game now.
(action happening now)

• He often scores goals.
(regular action)

• He is scoring a lot today.
(temporary situation)

DIALOGUE – BEFORE THE MATCH

Anna: Do you usually watch tournaments?
Mark: Yes, I love football competitions.

Anna: What’s happening now?
Mark: My team is playing an important match.

Anna: Are they winning?
Mark: Yes! They are beating the other team 2–0.

Anna: Amazing. Do they usually win games?
Mark: Yes, and one player often scores goals.

My brother loves sport and often enters competitions. He usually plays in local football tournaments, and his team often wins matches. He sometimes wins prizes and even has two medals at home. Right now, he is playing in an important game. His team is beating the other team, and he is scoring a lot of points this season. Last week, they lost a match, but today they are playing much better. He dreams of becoming a professional athlete one day.

Read the article twice. Focus on the difference between the two tenses.
