B1 Preliminary (PET) Speaking Exam 1

👩‍🏫 General Exam Information

• Time: 10–12 minutes

• Participants: 2 candidates + 2 examiners

• Parts: 4 (Interaction, Description, Discussion, and Conversation)

🧩 Part 1 – Personal Questions (Interview)

Examiner's Questions:

1. What’s your name?

2. Where are you from?

3. What do you do in your free time?

4. Tell me about your family.

5. What kind of music do you like?

6. What do you usually do at the weekend?

7. How long have you been studying English?

8. Do you prefer studying alone or with other people? Why?

⏱️ Time: 3 minutes

🖼️ Part 2 – Describing a Photo

Each candidate gets one picture and describes it alone for about 1 minute.

Candidate A – Picture

(Describe the photo below for one minute.
🖼️ Topic: Free time – playing sports

Task:
“Here is your photograph. Please tell me what you can see in the picture.”

⏱️ Time: 1 minute each

💬 Part 3 – Collaborative Task (Discourse)

Here is your prompt and a situation to talk about.

🖼️ Topic: Choosing an activity for a class trip

A class is going to have a trip. Here are some ideas:

• Visit a museum

• Go hiking in the mountains

• Spend a day at the beach

• Visit a zoo

• Go to an amusement park

• Have a picnic in a park

Task:
Talk about what would be fun and interesting for everyone, and decide which activity would be best for the class.”

⏱️ Time:

First phase 1:30 minutes of talking time. (discussion)

Second phase 30 seconds to come to a conclusion. (decision)

Important note*

In the actual exam, you will be given a visual prompt; a paper full of pictures), and you will have about 3 minutes to speak with your partner in the first phase and then in the second phase, you will have only 1 minute to come to a conclusion.

🎯 Part 4 – Discussion (Follow-up questions)

Examiner asks general questions related to the theme of Part 3.

Task:

1. Do you like going on trips with friends or family? Why?

2. What are the advantages of travelling with other people?

3. What are some good places to visit in your country?

4. Do you think people learn something when they go on trips?

5. What do you think makes a trip successful?
