Goal: Practise two British English diphthongs by moving smoothly from one vowel sound to another within the same syllable.
1. WARM-UP
Say each sound slowly, then naturally.
/eɪ/ — day, rain, face
/aɪ/ — my, time, light
Instruction: Start with your mouth relatively open and move towards a closer vowel position. Avoid separating the sounds into two syllables.
2. SOUND 1 — /eɪ/
Examples: day, make, train, great, explain.
Practise these sentences:
Kate ate a piece of cake.
Jane is waiting for the train.
They played games all day.
I made a mistake yesterday.
The rain came late in the day.
Eight students stayed to explain their ideas.
Activation: Read each sentence slowly, exaggerating the vowel movement. Repeat at normal speaking speed.
3. SOUND 2 — /aɪ/
Examples: my, five, right, smile, arrive.
Practise these sentences:
I like my new bike.
Five white mice ran outside.
Mike arrived at nine.
The bright light is in my eyes.
I tried to find the right size.
We climbed high to see the entire island.
Activation: Keep the vowel moving smoothly. Do not turn the sound into a flat Spanish vowel or add an extra syllable.
4. CONTRAST PRACTICE
Instruction: Read each pair aloud. Focus on the difference between /eɪ/ and /aɪ/.
late — light
day — die
pain — pine
same — sign
wait — white
fail — file
race — rice
came — climb
Now practise these sentences:
Jane likes riding her bike, but she hates waiting.
They stayed inside until the bright sunshine appeared.
I made a cake while Mike repaired his bike.
The train arrived late, so I missed my flight.
5. WORD PRONUNCIATION GUESSING
Instruction: Read each word aloud before checking its diphthong. Identify whether it contains /eɪ/ or /aɪ/.
Break
Price
Weight
Flight
Raise
Crime
Shape
Drive
Taste
Shine
6. FINAL CHALLENGE — READ AND RECORD
Instruction: Record yourself reading the paragraph. Listen back and check whether both diphthongs are clear and distinct.
On Friday, Jane and Mike decided to take a train to a seaside town. They arrived late, but the weather was fine, and the bright sunshine made them smile. They ate a slice of cake, walked beside the waves, and stayed until the sky turned grey. On the way home, they agreed to make the same trip again.
Success criterion: You can produce /eɪ/ and /aɪ/ clearly in individual words, contrasting pairs and connected speech without breaking either diphthong into separate syllables.
