1. Warm-Up (3 min)

🗣️ Discuss:

  • Why do you wake up early?

  • Why do people learn new skills?

  • What do you do to relax after work?

💬 Sample answers:
I wake up early to exercise.
People learn new skills so that they can get better jobs.
I listen to music in order to relax.

🎯 Focus: Purpose clauses explain why someone does something.

2. Presentation (8 min)

A. Purpose with Infinitives (same subject)

Used when the same person does both actions.

Common forms:

  • to + verb

  • in order to + verb

  • so as to + verb (more formal)

💬 Examples:

  • I study to improve my English.

  • She left early in order to catch the train.

  • He whispered so as to avoid waking the baby.

🧠 Tip:
Use these when the same subject performs both actions.

B. Purpose with “so that” (different subject OR focus on result)

Structure:
so that + subject + can/will/could/would + verb

Use when:

  • the subject changes, or

  • you want to highlight the result.

💬 Examples:

  • I spoke slowly so that he could understand me.

  • She saves money so that she will have enough for travel.
