IELTS Speaking Exam Practice: Lesson 1
Topic: Work, Study and Daily Routines
Lesson objective: Develop fluent, natural answers using two key complex sentence structures. Focus on grammatical accuracy, precise vocabulary and extending your ideas naturally.
1. WARM-UP
Answer the questions aloud. Aim for 2–4 sentences per question.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Are you more productive in the morning or in the evening?
What do you enjoy most about your work or studies?
Is there anything about your daily routine you would like to change?
Do you think people nowadays work harder than they used to?
2. VOCABULARY
Learn these expressions and use them naturally in your answers.
1. Strike a balance - To manage two or more important areas of life successfully.
Example: I try to strike a balance between my professional responsibilities and my personal life.
2. Be tied up with - To be very busy doing something.
Example: I've been tied up with work lately, so I haven't had much time to socialise.
3. A steep learning curve - A situation in which you have to learn a lot in a short time.
Example: Starting my current job involved a steep learning curve, but it helped me develop valuable skills.
4. A sense of fulfilment - A feeling of satisfaction because something is worthwhile.
Example: Teaching gives me a sense of fulfilment because I can see the progress people make.
5. Work towards a goal - To make consistent efforts to achieve something.
Example: I'm working towards a goal of becoming more financially independent.
6. To some extent - Partly, but not completely.
Example: To some extent, I agree that technology has improved productivity, although it has also made people more distracted.
3. GRAMMAR — COMPLEX SENTENCES
This lesson focuses on just two complex sentence concepts. Study each structure, practise transforming sentences and then apply it in your speaking answers.
A. Concession — Although / Even though
Purpose: Acknowledge a contrast between two ideas while emphasising your main point.
Structure:
Although + subject + verb, main clause.
Main clause + although + subject + verb.
Even though + subject + verb, main clause.
Examples:
Although my job can be demanding, I find it rewarding.
I enjoy working independently, although I recognise the value of teamwork.
Even though I have a busy schedule, I make time for exercise.
Key rule: Do not use but in the same sentence structure as although.
Incorrect: Although my job is stressful, but I enjoy it.
Correct: Although my job is stressful, I enjoy it.
Speaking application: Use concession when discussing preferences, challenges, opinions and advantages or disadvantages.
B. Hypothetical situations — If I could / If I were to
Purpose: Discuss imagined situations, possible changes and unreal or unlikely circumstances.
Structure 1: If I could + base verb, I would + base verb.
If I could change one thing about my routine, I would spend less time on my phone.
If I could choose any career, I would do something more creative.
Structure 2: If I were to + base verb, I would + base verb.
If I were to change careers, I would consider working in technology.
If I were to study another language, I would probably choose Italian.
Key rule: In these hypothetical sentences, avoid using would in the if-clause.
Incorrect: If I would have more free time, I would travel more.
Correct: If I had more free time, I would travel more.
Speaking application: Use these structures to discuss ambitions, changes you would make, future possibilities and hypothetical social situations.
4. ACTIVATION
Rewrite each sentence using the specified structure. Keep the original meaning.
A — Although / Even though
My job is stressful, but I enjoy it. (Although)
I have very little free time, but I exercise regularly. (Even though)
Working from home is convenient, but it can be isolating. (Although)
B — Hypothetical situations
I don't have more free time, so I can't learn another language. (If I could)
I probably won't change careers, but I would choose a creative profession. (If I were to)
I cannot afford to travel more often, but I would visit several countries. (If I could)
5. PRACTICE
Each sentence contains a deliberate error. Identify and correct it.
A — Although / Even though
Although I enjoy my job, but I sometimes find it exhausting.
Even though the course was difficult, but I learnt a great deal.
Although working remotely has advantages, but it can make communication harder.
B — Hypothetical situations
If I would have a better work-life balance, I would feel less stressed.
If I were to changing jobs, I would look for more flexibility.
If I could improve one professional skill, I will focus on communication.
6. IELTS SPEAKING PART 1
4–5 minutes · Familiar topics
In Part 1, the examiner asks straightforward questions about your life. Aim for around 2–4 sentences per answer.
Answer all six questions aloud.
Do you work or are you a student?
What do you like most about your work or studies?
Do you prefer having a fixed routine or being flexible?
How do you usually organise your time?
Is there anything you find challenging about your daily routine?
What would you like to achieve over the next few years?
Complex sentence challenge:
Use although or even though in at least two answers.
Use if I could or if I were to in at least one answer.
Try to include one expression from the vocabulary section in a relevant answer.
Avoid forcing complex structures into answers where they do not sound natural.
7. IELTS SPEAKING PART 2
1 minute to prepare · Speak for 1–2 minutes
Describe a skill you would like to develop.
You should say:
What the skill is.
Why you want to develop it.
How you would go about improving it.
And explain how this skill could benefit you in the future.
Preparation task
Use your one-minute preparation time to write keywords, not full sentences.
Skill: What exactly do you want to improve?
Motivation: Why does it matter to you?
Action: What specific steps would you take?
Future: What opportunities could it create?
Complex sentence challenge:
Include at least one sentence with although or even though, and one hypothetical sentence using if I could or if I were to.
Try to use one or two vocabulary expressions from Section 2 where they fit your ideas.
Prioritise natural delivery and grammatical accuracy.
8. IELTS SPEAKING PART 3
4–5 minutes · Abstract discussion
Part 3 requires you to explain, compare, evaluate and speculate. Develop your reasoning rather than simply stating your opinion.
Question 1: Why do some people find it difficult to learn new skills as adults?
Question 2: Do you think practical skills are more important than academic qualifications?
Question 3: How has technology changed the way people learn?
Question 4: Should employers be responsible for helping their employees develop new skills?
Question 5: Do you think people will have to change careers more frequently in the future?
Complex sentence challenge:
For each answer, consider whether you can:
Use although / even though to acknowledge an opposing point.
Use if I were to / if people could to explore a hypothetical situation.
Incorporate relevant expressions such as to some extent, a steep learning curve or work towards a goal.
Useful expressions:
One of the main reasons for this is that…
This is particularly evident when…
To some extent, I would agree with that view, although…
If people were given more opportunities to learn, they might…
A possible consequence of this is…
9. HOMEWORK — WRITE & RECORD
Complete the following tasks without reading a prepared script aloud.
Task 1: Record answers to all six Part 1 questions.
Task 2: Record your Part 2 response. Aim for 1–2 minutes.
Task 3: Choose three Part 3 questions and record extended answers.
Task 4: Listen to your recordings and identify three improvements: one related to grammar, one to vocabulary and one to fluency or pronunciation.
Task 5: Write five original sentences using the two complex structures. Include at least two examples of concession and two hypothetical situations. Bold the target vocabulary in your written examples.
Try to use the structures accurately rather than repeatedly inserting them into every answer.
10. CORRECTIONS
Activation — Suggested answers

Even though I have very little free time, I exercise regularly.
Although working from home is convenient, it can be isolating.
If I could have more free time, I would learn another language.
If I were to change careers, I would choose a creative profession.

Final reminder: Band 7–7.5 speaking requires flexibility, accurate grammar and well-developed ideas. Your priority in this lesson is to master concession and hypothetical situations and use them confidently in spontaneous speech. Practise the vocabulary until it becomes part of your active speaking rather than something you have to remember to insert.
