GRAMMAR – PRESENT SIMPLE & PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Present simple

Present continuous
Use it for something happening now or around the present time.

ALWAYS + PRESENT CONTINUOUS
We can use always + present continuous to show that something happens repeatedly and often feels surprising, annoying, or emotionally important.

• She is always forgetting her keys.
• You're always interrupting me!
DRAMATIC STORYTELLING
The present simple and present continuous can make a past story feel more immediate and dramatic.
• So I'm walking home when suddenly I hear a strange noise.
• I'm looking around, and this man comes towards me.
• I'm thinking about running away when he starts laughing.
DIALOGUE – A STRANGE EXPERIENCE
Anna: You look worried. What's happening?
Mark: I'm waiting for the train, and suddenly this man starts shouting.
Anna: What do you do?
Mark: I look at him, and he's always shouting at everyone.
Anna: That sounds frightening.
Mark: It is! I'm standing there, completely petrified, when suddenly he starts laughing.
Anna: What happens next?
Mark: He explains that he's joking, and everyone starts laughing.
Read again and practise.
SHORT ARTICLE
I'm walking home one evening when suddenly I hear someone calling my name. I turn around, but nobody is there. I'm starting to feel anxious when I hear the voice again. This time, I look behind me and see an old friend.
He is always playing jokes on people, so I immediately know what's happening. At first, I'm petrified, but then he starts laughing and I realise it's a joke. We walk to a nearby café and catch up. He tells me that he is always looking for new ways to surprise his friends.
By the end of the evening, I'm delighted that I saw him. His strange surprise has moved me more than I expected.
Read the article twice.
