WARM UP

Think about nature.

• Do you prefer the beach or the countryside?
• Do you like flowers and trees?
• Is there a river or a forest near your home?
• Do you spend time in a garden or on the grass?
• What natural place do you like most? Why?

Answer in full sentences.

VOCABULARY – THE NATURAL WORLD

Nature

beach – playa
Example: I go to the beach in summer.

countryside – campo
Example: I like the countryside because it is quiet.

flowers – flores
Example: These flowers are beautiful.

forest – bosque
Example: We walk in the forest.

garden – jardín
Example: I have a garden at home.

grass – césped
Example: The grass is green.

river – río
Example: The river is very long.

sea – mar
Example: The sea is blue.

tree – árbol
Example: This tree is tall.

Say each word out loud.
Think about places near you.

GRAMMAR – COMPARATIVES (SPELLING)

We use comparatives to compare two things.

• Add -er to short adjectives
• Add -r if the word ends in -e
• Double the consonant for short words (CVC)
• Change -y → -ier

Examples

big → bigger
hot → hotter
small → smaller
long → longer
tall → taller

nice → nicer
safe → safer

dirty → dirtier
happy → happier

clean → cleaner
old → older
new → newer
young → younger

hungry → hungrier
sad → sadder

Use than to compare:

• The river is longer than the road.
• This beach is cleaner than that one.
• The forest is bigger than the garden.

DIALOGUE – TALKING ABOUT PLACES

Anna: Do you like the beach or the countryside?
Mark: I like the countryside. It is quieter and cleaner.

Anna: Is the forest bigger than the garden?
Mark: Yes, the forest is bigger than the garden.

Anna: Is the river long?
Mark: Yes, it is, but the sea is bigger.

SHORT ARTICLE

I like nature. The countryside is quieter than the city, and it is cleaner. The forest is bigger than my garden, and the trees are taller. The river is longer than the road near my house. The beach is nicer in summer, and the sea is bluer. I feel happier in nature because it is safer and more relaxing.

Focus on pronunciation of comparatives (-er, -ier, double consonants).
