GRAMMAR

Read. Don’t analyse.

Purpose with Infinitives (same subject)

Used when the same person does both actions.

Common forms:

  • to + verb

  • in order to + verb

  • so as to + verb (more formal)

Examples:

  • I study to improve my English.

  • She left early in order to catch the train.

  • He whispered so as to avoid waking the baby.

Purpose with “so that” (different subject OR result focus)

Structure:
so that + subject + can / will / could / would + verb

Used when:

  • the subject changes, or

  • the result is more important.

Examples:

  • I spoke slowly so that he could understand me.

  • She saves money so that she will have enough for travel.

  • They turned off the lights so that the baby would sleep.

Micro-rule

  • to / in order to / so as to + verb → same subject

  • so that + subject + modal + verb → different subject or clear result

ACTIVATION

Student must orally create the sentence.

Example:
Why are you studying so much?
→ I’m studying to pass my exam.
→ I’m studying so that I can get a better job.

Prompts:

  • wake up early

  • save money

  • turn off your phone

  • work extra hours

  • speak slowly

  • move to another city

(Student chooses the correct purpose structure.)
