Lesson Goal:

Understand and correctly use such as, as, and like to give examples, comparisons, and roles in everyday speech.

1. Warm-Up (3 min)

🗣️ Discuss:

  1. What hobbies do you enjoy?

  2. What jobs would you like to have?

  3. Who do you admire?

💬 Sample answers:

I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.
I’d like to work as a teacher.
I want to be confident like my coach.

🎯 Focus: These three expressions all connect ideas — but in different ways.

2. Presentation (8 min)

A. SUCH AS – for giving examples

Use such as to introduce specific examples of a general idea.

Form:

General idea + such as + examples

💬 Examples:

I love fruits such as apples and bananas.
Many countries such as Spain and Italy have great food.
You need vitamins such as A and C.

🧠 Tip: Don’t confuse with “like” — “such as” gives real examples, not comparisons.

B. LIKE – for showing similarity

Use like to say something is similar to something else.

Form:

Subject + verb + like + noun/pronoun

💬 Examples:

He swims like a fish.
She looks like her mother.
I want a job like yours.

🧠 Tip: “Like” = comparison, not example.
I enjoy sports like tennis and football → means similar to, not real examples.
I enjoy sports such as tennis and football → gives real examples.

C. AS – for describing roles, jobs, or functions

Use as to show a function or role (not comparison).

Form:

Subject + verb + as + noun

💬 Examples:

She works as a nurse.
He used his jacket as a pillow.
I speak to my students as a teacher.

🧠 Tip: “As” = in the role of / used as something
Compare:

He works as a waiter. (his job)
He works like a waiter. (he behaves like one, but isn’t)

⚠️ Common Mistakes

I like food like pizza and pasta. → You mean examples → ✅ such as
He used his hand like a phone. (ok for comparison)
He used his hand as a phone. (function → correct)

5. Engaging Discussion (5 min)

🗣️ Answer the questions naturally using “such as”, “as”, or “like”:

  4. Have you ever used something as something else?

  5. What countries would you like to visit such as Spain or Italy?
